Australias gaming giant, Crown Resorts, faces a monumental penalty of AU$120 million (US$67.7 million) for its Melbourne establishment’s inability to maintain responsible gaming conduct.

This unparalleled sanction arises amidst a surge of gambling controversies throughout Australia, with governing entities under intense examination for their supervision of the sector. Crown, specifically, appears to be shouldering the majority of this heightened scrutiny, as the Victorian Gambling and Casino Control Commission has opted to use the casino’s transgressions as a deterrent.

A substantial portion of the financial repercussion, AU$100 million, was imposed for the establishment’s inability to stop customers from engaging in gambling activities for periods exceeding 24 consecutive hours. A further AU$20 million was added to the punishment due to the casino’s failure to halt patrons from employing plastic picks to tamper with electronic gaming devices.

This pivotal ruling follows a royal commission investigation into Crown, with the commission’s leader, Fran Thorn, declaring that “These infractions were not isolated occurrences. They were a pattern of widespread, prolonged, and methodical shortcomings by Crown that extended for approximately 12 years.”

The investigation revealed distressing accounts of the ruinous consequences stemming from Crown’s failings. Thorn continued, “We listened to numerous heartbreaking narratives at the royal commission of financial devastation, suicide endeavors, families ripped apart, and individuals coerced into sex work and other exploitative actions, all because Crown neglected to avert gambling harm.” These accounts included individuals participating in gambling for two to three consecutive days without intervention, turning to larceny to sustain their compulsion, and ultimately losing their loved ones due to their gambling issues.

Simultaneously, the Australian gambling enterprise Star Entertainment is facing difficulties with the New South Wales Independent Casino Commission (NICC). Allegations against them include disregarding money-washing activities and even associating with criminal syndicates.
